geo-technical engineers capability of working with data from soil and rock samples to specify the requirements for man-made structures and earthworks that will be built on a site. These structures include shallow foundations (footings), deep foundations (piles and drilled piers), retaining walls, dams, embankments etc.
The Department of Transportation and Geo-technical engineering was established in the year 2001 to provide undergraduate courses in civil engineering in the areas of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Geomatics. The Department also offers postgraduate programmes leading to the award of Postgraduate Diploma in civil Engineering with specialization in transportation engineering and Master of Science in Highway Engineering (course work and dissertation) as well as Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Transportation Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering by research. The staff provides consultancy services in the areas of their specialization mentioned above. Laboratory services are offered in the areas of soil mechanics, highway engineering and Geomatics (land survey).
